These are common backyard rules of thumb, not legal requirements. More space is better when you can give it. Check your city or HOA rules on flock size and roosters before you build.

Frequently asked questions
Is a bigger coop always better?
Within reason. More space reduces pecking and stress, but in cold climates a very large coop is harder for hens to keep warm. Good ventilation matters more than size.
Should I heat my chicken coop?
Most cold-hardy breeds do fine without heat if the coop is dry and draft-free with good ventilation. Heat lamps are a common cause of coop fires.
How many eggs will my hens lay?
It varies a lot by breed, age, season and daylight. Many backyard layers average a few eggs per week each, with fewer in winter and during molt.
